The UC Davis Engineering Student Startup Center is a dedicated on-campus space where entrepreneurial students can gather to unleash their creative potential by facilitating ideation, prototyping their ideas and, ultimately, collaborating on technology start-ups. Yesterday morning at 1 Million Cups we got to hear two pitches from startups that have come out of the the program; DoDrop and Chromatiscope.

Liz Tang, director of the UC Davis Engineering Student Startup Center, first told the 1 Million Cups Sacramento crowd about the program.

After Liz’s overview of the program the audience heard from current UC Davis student Rueben Dunn about his startup DoDrop.

DoDrop is an app that thinks of exciting new sports, hobbies, crafts, and adventures for you to try. For each activity DoDrop picks, you can “do it” or “drop it”. The app uses machine-learning algorithms to process your feedback and adapt to your personality. The more you use it, the smarter it gets.

A standard aspect of every 1 Million Cups is to ask the presenters what the community can do for them. When asked what the community could do for DoDrop, Rueben replied that he is looking for advice on best marketing methods for app startups to promote the app.

After receiving a wealth of great tips and advice for Rueben from the audience it was time for the second presenter, Alex Godbout about his startup Chromatiscope. Chromatiscope is an affordable smartphone-driven “lab in a box” that will bring high end laboratory devices to the general public, starting with the education system. They are currently working with Liz Tang in order to bring this product to market.

As for what the community can do for Chromatiscope, Alex responded that he’s looking for help in finding the right market.

This was another good turnout with great collaboration among the attendees. If you haven’t made it out to one of the weekly 1 Million Cups events, you’re missing out, but you can still check out past presentations on the 1 Million Cups Sacramento website and view videos of the presentation on the 1 Million Cups Sacramento YouTube channel.
