In a remarkable display of creativity and technological prowess, Sacramento State hosted an AI Hackathon that stood as a testament to the innovative spirit of its participants. Under the leadership of Hashem Jaber, the Student Director for ASI Engineering and Computer Science, and Cameron Law, the Executive Director of the Carlsen Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, this event drew over 60 students into a collaborative and competitive arena. The hackathon, which happened over two days, March 29 and April 5, was a focal point for ideas that blend technology with practical applications, addressing some of the pressing challenges of our time.

Driving Innovation Through Competition

The AI Hackathon was structured to ignite creativity and foster an environment where technology meets real-world needs. The participants, forming 12 teams, went through a full day of intense development on March 29, leading to the presentation of 10 innovative pitches on April 5. This format not only facilitated a deep dive into the potential of AI but also encouraged a healthy competitive spirit among the students.

Standout Solutions

Among the standout solutions, two teams captured the essence of the hackathon’s goal: innovation for a better tomorrow.

First Place ($750)

SafeGuard AI presented a compelling vision for the future of public safety. Their AI-powered surveillance system is designed to turn passive monitoring into active security. Utilizing the YOLOv8 model trained on a bespoke dataset of 800 images, SafeGuard AI demonstrated an unparalleled ability for near-instantaneous weapon detection. This project not only showcased the technical skill of its creators but also reflected a deep understanding of societal needs.

Second Place ($250)

APEX addressed the critical issue of accessibility for disabled people in computer usage. Their software transcends traditional interaction barriers, offering a cross-platform solution that enables control through head/eye movements and voice commands. APEX is more than just a tool; it’s a gateway to inclusivity, empowering individuals with physical limitations to interact with technology in ways previously deemed impossible.

Final Thoughts

The AI Hackathon was more than an event; it was a platform that showcased the transformative potential of artificial intelligence. Through the lens of security and accessibility, the hackathon illustrated how technology can be harnessed to address critical societal issues. As we reflect on the success of this event, it’s clear that such platforms are crucial for the development of future technologies that can lead to significant societal impacts. Sacramento State’s initiative serves as an inspiring model for universities worldwide, highlighting the importance of innovation, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving in the field of AI.
