For nearly four years, StartupSac has mapped out Sacramento’s startup ecosystem and published it as the Sacramento Startup Ecosystem Diagram. This has been a focus for us because it’s important for a community to be able to find the resources they need. In fact, mapping an ecosystem is seen by many as an essential strategy to enable entrepreneurial ecosystems.

“Taking the ecosystem seriously as an economic model suggests the following strategies to enable entrepreneurial ecosystems: … Map the ecosystem. Create an inventory or graph that indicates who the participants in the ecosystem are and how they are connected.” – Enabling Entrepreneurial
Ecosystems, Philip E. Auerswald

It’s amazing to watch how much changes in our local ecosystem from one year to the next. The changes and updates needed for this version have been piling up for quite awhile. This latest version of the diagram not only shows new coworking spaces, events, and programs, but also brings a significant overhaul to the layout of the diagram with the intent to make it easier to update in the future.

That said, this version is only half-baked. It’s missing a significant feature from previous versions – interactivity. Previous versions of the diagram have been interactive, with the ability to click on the nodes throughout the diagram to visit the website of the resource. That functionality is currently not available on this version of the updated diagram, but will return in subsequent versions. Why? I just haven’t had time to finish incorporating it and rather than hold up the release any longer, in true MVP fashion, I decided to ship it without all the functionality that I want in it. (UPDATE 3/4/2020: That functionality has now been restored.)
