You may have been to other Startup Weekend events in the past but, there’s an upcoming Startup Weekend in Sacramento that is special. Global Startup Weekend Sustainable Revolution is focused on a problem that all of us see and feel on a daily basis – climate change, waste, pollution, and other sustainability issues.

Global Startup Weekend Sustainable Revolution is a global event, so, not only will participants be contributing at a local level, they’ll also be working on a global stage. During June, in over 50 cities around the world, innovators, entrepreneurs and people who care about the planet, will gather together to solve 15 sustainability challenges using the Startup Weekend Format.

15 challenges all around sustainability that people will have a chance to address:

  • Build eco-conceived products & reverse planned obsolescence
  • Change from a consumer business model to a user business model
  • Extend product’s lifetime
  • Upcycle
  • Substitute the disposable by the sustainable
  • Reduce food waste
  • Foster local production and local distribution
  • Build a sustainable agriculture and a sustainable food industry
  • Build highly energy efficient products and systems
  • Produce sustainable energy
  • (Re)Build sustainable buildings
  • Design resilient, smart and inclusive cities
  • Design Fintech for inclusive sustainable finance and markets
  • Build the future of sustainable transportation
  • Foster education on sustainability

Thomas Hall, executive director of CleanStart, is the lead organizer for this weekend-long event. Hall is putting out a call to action to people in the Sacramento region who see sustainability problems to come to Startup Weekend and help build a business idea around solving these problems. He’s hoping to help people launch viable businesses out of this weekend that CleanStart can include in their its resource map of Clean Tech companies in the Sacramento region.

Hall explains, “For us, it’s twofold. It’s connecting with the community and helping people locally. And, it’s growing opportunities and businesses that could be used around the globe. We anticipate that there will be people that will have ideas that could go global. But they’re going to start locally. They’re going to start changing things in their neighborhood and making a difference there. That’s why I really like to call it a revolution. Because it’s not some big thing that people can’t see. It’s right there in front of them and it’s a little step that they can take to making the world a better place.”

A common question often asked about Startup Weekends is if attendees have to have their own idea to pitch in order to participate. Hall is quick to point out that they don’t. “They can come just because they have a passion to help others and help to make a change in our environment. If you come without an idea, you can watch others pitch their ideas and then vote on the idea that you like and join that team and help them. It’s actually really fun. You’re working together over the weekend on an idea that the whole team is passionate about. It’s incredibly exciting!”

Asked why people should spend their weekend working on addressing climate change and sustainability, Hall quoted President Obama, “‘We’re the first generation to feel the effects of climate change and we are the last one that can do anything about it.’ It doesn’t have to be helpless. You can do things to make the world better and you can feel a lot better and have a lot of fun by meeting people that are like-minded, people that want to make a change, just like yourself.”
