Legal questions are part of building a business, but knowing when to ask them, who to ask, and what questions you should be thinking about is not always straightforward. StartupSac and Witan Law are launching Legal Grounds, a new monthly gathering designed to give founders, entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others building companies a place to have practical conversations about the legal issues that come with starting and growing a business.

The first Legal Grounds will take place Tuesday, October 6, from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM at the Roseville Venture Lab. Additional gatherings for 2026 are scheduled for November 10 and December 1. In 2027, Legal Grounds will usually be held on the First Tuesday of the month with occasional exceptions.

A Different Kind of Legal Conversation

Legal Grounds is designed to be less formal than a traditional workshop or presentation. Instead of spending the entire session listening to a speaker, attendees will have an opportunity to help guide the conversation. Each 90-minute gathering will begin with a short, 5 to 10-minute briefing from a Witan Law attorney on a timely legal topic relevant to business owners. From there, the session will shift into an open, roundtable-style discussion.

Participants can bring questions, share situations they are navigating, and learn from questions raised by others in the room. The goal is simple: create a regular space where entrepreneurs can become more informed about the legal side of running a business through practical conversation.

Bring the Questions You Are Facing

The legal needs of a business can change quickly as it grows. Questions can come up around business formation, agreements, intellectual property, employees, investors, compliance, partnerships, and other areas. Legal Grounds gives participants an opportunity to discuss these types of issues with an experienced startup attorney while also hearing what other business owners are encountering.

You do not need to arrive with a specific legal problem or even be a founder to participate. Anyone who is starting, operating, or growing a business, or who wants to better understand the legal issues businesses face, is welcome to attend. There are no pitches and no lengthy presentations. The focus is on coffee, conversation, and useful information.
