cybersecurity

Our increasingly connected lives of smart phones and other smart devices weaved into the fabric of our lives can make our lives more convenient and efficient. But this connectivity presents vulnerabilities as well. Rarely does a day go by where we don’t hear about a data breach or stolen identities or malware attack on systems.

Cybersecurity, the discipline of protecting computer systems from theft, damage and disruption or misdirection of their services, is becoming an increasingly critical role in our digital society. With exponential growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, Forbes expects the global cybersecurity market to reach 170 billion by 2020. A Global Information Workforce study predicts the cybersecurity workforce gap is on pace to hit 1.8 million by 2022. It’s no wonder then, that local organizations, including the Mayor Office for Innovation and Entrepreneurship have identified cybersecurity as a key focus area in our regional workforce development strategy.

Local non-profit Yellow Circle is doing its part by organizing and presenting an annual cybersecurity camp for students 13-18 with the goal to increase interest in cybersecurity careers and increase the diversity in the cybersecurity workforce, ensuring that enough young people are inspired to direct their talents in this area that is critical to the future of our country’s national and economic security.
