Many entrepreneurs have great ideas but struggle with one important challenge: turning those ideas into something tangible.
Whether you’re developing a new product, improving an existing one, or trying to communicate a concept to customers, investors, or manufacturers, creating a physical prototype can make a significant difference. That’s where 3D printing comes in.
On Thursday, July 9, Urban Technology Lab will host Prototype Smarter: Intro to 3D Printing for Business, a beginner-friendly workshop designed to help founders, entrepreneurs, and small business owners understand how 3D printing can support product development and innovation.
The event takes place from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at 1792 Tribute Rd Suite 455, Sacramento, CA 95815. RSVP here.
Why Entrepreneurs Should Learn About 3D Printing
In the past, creating a prototype often required expensive manufacturing processes, specialized equipment, or outside vendors. Today, 3D printing allows founders to create physical models quickly and affordably.
A prototype can help you:
- Test product ideas before investing in production
- Identify design flaws early
- Demonstrate concepts to customers and investors
- Improve communication with manufacturers
- Explore small batch production opportunities
Even if your business is not focused on manufacturing, understanding how prototypes are developed can help you make better decisions as you grow.
What You’ll Learn
This workshop is designed for beginners and requires no prior experience.
Participants will receive an introduction to:
- How 3D printing works
- Common applications for startups and small businesses
- FDM printing technology
- Popular printing materials
- Printer setup basics
- Slicer software and file preparation
- Factors to consider before purchasing a 3D printer
- Product testing and prototype development strategies
- Next steps after creating your first prototype

The session focuses on practical knowledge that founders can immediately apply to their own projects and business ideas.
Meet the Instructor
The workshop will be led by Alan Ware, founder of AMW Design and an experienced technical instructor specializing in engineering, manufacturing, CAD modeling, prototype design, and additive manufacturing.
Throughout his career, Alan has helped students, entrepreneurs, and innovators develop practical technical skills through hands-on training. His experience includes teaching technical drawing, electrical soldering, 3D printer setup, and product development processes.
His approach focuses on helping people move beyond concepts and begin building real-world solutions.
