Many founders spend months refining pitch decks before they have validated sales, customer demand, or a repeatable path to growth. Investors are becoming more selective, especially in the current market, and they want more than vision. They want traction.
That is exactly where the new Carlsen Center’s Traction Lab Investment Readiness Engine from the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship is focused.
Applications are now open for the nine month accelerator program designed to help Sacramento region startups strengthen customer acquisition, validate their business model, and prepare for investment opportunities. The program is targeting scalable startups working in business-to-business solutions, SaaS, artificial intelligence, and other innovation-driven sectors.
For founders serious about building a venture-backed company, this program is designed to move beyond theory and into execution.
A Program Built Around Validation, Not Just Pitching
One of the biggest differences with Traction Lab is its focus on measurable traction rather than presentation skills alone.
According to Cameron Law, Executive Director of the Carlsen Center, the accelerator is not designed to simply teach startups how to pitch investors. Instead, founders will work through real world validation experiments that expose weaknesses, identify growth opportunities, and help startups develop repeatable systems for customer acquisition and sales.
That distinction matters.
Too many early stage startups focus on creating projections before proving demand. Traction Lab flips that approach by helping founders gather tangible evidence that demonstrates investment readiness. This includes validating sales strategies, enterprise pilots, customer acquisition systems, and go-to-market execution.
For founders trying to close the gap between idea and scalable company, this type of hands-on validation can become a major advantage.
What Startups Will Receive
The program will select 15 companies to participate in the accelerator beginning this August. Over the course of nine months, founders will work through two parallel tracks focused on growth and investment readiness.
The first track focuses on building a repeatable sales and customer acquisition process. The second focuses on proving investor readiness through measurable milestones and traction.
Some participating startups will also receive up to $20,000 in non-dilutive funding to run validation experiments and test growth strategies.
At the end of the program, several finalists will move forward to a $100,000 SPV Investment Showcase supported by investors connected through the Carlsen Center and the NorCal AngelCon network.
For many founders, access to investors is one of the most difficult barriers in early stage entrepreneurship. Programs like Traction Lab help bridge that gap by combining accountability, strategy, traction development, and investor visibility in one structured experience.

Traction Lab is designed for founders who are ready to commit seriously to scaling their company.
The ideal applicant is likely already building a product, testing the market, or gaining early traction but needs support refining customer acquisition, proving scalability, and preparing for pre-seed investment opportunities.

Sacramento’s Startup Ecosystem Continues to Grow
Programs like Traction Lab reflect a broader shift happening across the Sacramento region.
Over the past several years, Sacramento has continued building momentum as a startup and innovation hub. Organizations like the Carlsen Center, Growth Factory, StartupSac, and others have helped create more pathways for founders to access mentorship, community, and early stage support.
What makes Traction Lab stand out is its emphasis on traction and execution.
Investors are increasingly looking for startups that can demonstrate customer demand, operational discipline, and clear growth strategies. Founders who can prove those fundamentals often position themselves more competitively when fundraising opportunities emerge.
For entrepreneurs who are ready to move beyond ideas and start validating what their business can truly become, this accelerator could provide the structure and accountability needed to accelerate growth.
