Capitalize: Next Gen Is Here to Elevate Sacramento’s Emerging Founders
Building a company in its early stages can be isolating, especially when you are navigating product development, validation, and pitching for the first time. Capitalize: Next Gen exists to close that gap. Now in its eleventh year, the Sacramento Kings’ flagship startup competition has been reimagined to spotlight the next generation of innovators across the Sacramento region.
Since launching in 2016, Capitalize has supported more than 200 local startups, providing founders with mentorship, exposure, and a platform few programs can match. Capitalize: Next Gen continues that legacy with a renewed focus on emerging entrepreneurs who are actively building and testing ideas that have the potential to grow.
Who Capitalize Next Gen Is Designed For
Capitalize: Next Gen is built for early-stage founders and innovators ages 18 to 30 who are actively developing a business or product. Participants do not need to follow a traditional academic path to be eligible. The program welcomes founders coming from colleges and universities, workforce development programs, apprenticeships, community-based learning environments, alternative education models, or self-directed entrepreneurial journeys.
Eligible applicants must be located within a 75-mile radius of Golden 1 Center. In addition to applying directly, startups may also be nominated by an educational institution or organization that supports entrepreneurs. This makes Capitalize: Next Gen accessible to founders who may not yet be plugged into formal startup ecosystems but are doing real work to build something new. Nominate a startup here.

What Participants Gain From the Program
Capitalize: Next Gen offers more than a cash prize. Selected startups receive pitch coaching, mentorship, and direct exposure to investors, executives, and industry leaders. Participants refine how they communicate their ideas, strengthen their business narratives, and prepare for high-stakes presentations.
Eight startups will be selected to advance in the competition and participate in coaching and mentorship ahead of Pitch Day. From there, four finalists will be chosen to advance to fan voting, with pitch videos shared publicly for community engagement. This process gives founders both expert feedback and real-world visibility.
Pitch Day, Fan Voting, and the $10,000 Prize
Pitch Day is a defining moment in the Capitalize: Next Gen journey. Finalists present their companies to a panel of judges who evaluate team strength, product-market fit, and creativity. Four finalists advance to fan voting, which remains open through halftime of the Sacramento Kings home game on April 3, 2026.
The winner is announced live in the arena and awarded a $10,000 cash prize to support the continued growth of their business. Additional prizes are also awarded to second, third, and fourth place finalists, reinforcing Capitalize’s commitment to supporting multiple founders, not just one.
