Entrepreneurs from all over the region to compete in Startup Contest

Startup Weekend Sacramento announced today that its next competition takes place this weekend, November 11-13, during Global Entrepreneurship Week at newly-formed Impact Venture Capital’s office in downtown Sacramento. The event kicks off this Friday evening, November 11, with Keynote speaker Sheri Atwood, CEO of SupportPay, which recently relocated to Sacramento from the Bay Area.

“I’m excited to have recently joined the Sacramento startup community from Silicon Valley and honored to be a speaker at Startup Weekend Sacramento,” said Atwood. “I hope I can share some of the many lessons I have learned over the years and inspire more people to follow their dreams and make a difference in the world.”

The theme for November’s event is “Test Drive Entrepreneurship.” Anyone interested in entrepreneurship is encouraged to attend whether or not they have a startup idea. At Startup Weekends, attendees learn through the act of creating. Participants will spend 54-hours working together to design, prototype and create business plans for their ideas. Teams will form at the event and will build foundations for their business ideas, receive critical feedback from local tech and business leaders, and compete for various non-cash prizes.

The first Startup Weekend held in Sacramento was in 2013 at Hacker Lab in midtown. Since then, seven events have been held in different areas of the region including Davis and Elk Grove. This will be the first downtown event.

“We’re excited to bring Startup Weekend to Downtown, especially with the focus on technology and innovation the Sacramento Kings and the Golden 1 Center have recently brought to this part of the city,” said Jeff Bennett, Startup Weekend organizer and creator of the StartupSac.com website. “With help from the City, we’re making it easier for our event participants to navigate parking by providing parking validation if they park in the City Hall Garage.”

This Startup Weekend is supported by Google for Entrepreneurs, TechStars Startup Programs and local sponsors including Impact Venture Capital, Nivagen, and VSP Global.

“Impact Venture Capital is focused on empowering the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders that will help solve global challenges,” said Jack Crawford, general partner at Impact Venture Capital. “Startup Weekend aligns with that mission. We are enthusiastic about Northern California’s vibrant startup community, and hope to serve as a catalyst for ideas, capital, and innovation in this entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

Impact Venture Capital, the venue sponsor for Startup Weekend, is holding its first annual Impact Global Venture Summit on Monday, November 14 at the Golden 1 Center and the top three teams from Startup Weekend will be invited to exhibit on the demo floor.
