Last week, local news was bursting with startup scene updates. These articles are required reading if you’re committed to being a part of our ecosystem! Can Sacramento Become a Capital of Entrepreneurship? was in Comstock’s Magazine and A hub for startups? Sacramento taps tech innovation fund to renovate historic train station was in the Sacramento Bee. Just the fact that local news is now including so much tech startup news is encouraging to me. If you come across some interesting reading on Sacramento’s startup scene, please pass it along to me!

Remember Area 52? It’s the soon-to-open maker and coworking space in Davis. And by soon-to-open I mean they really are nearly there! Owners say they will open “in the next few months.” It’s been awhile since the space was first announced but now you can submit an application to be considered as a tenant/member.

This Week’s Best Bets

Tuesday night there is a free Branding workshop targeted at Startup Founders at InnoGrove. The speaker, Aaron Heinrich, recently moved to our area from Silicon Valley where he consulted with many tech companies and startups on developing their brand. I’m going to check it out!

Late on Thursday morning, Venture Catalyst Knowledge Exchange presents Counter-Culture Entrepreneurialism in Davis (free lunch!). 3fold Communications CEO, Gordon Fowler, will address the “glorification of entrepreneurship” and why the current definition of success is “only meaningful to the egocentric and brutally narcissistic.” Sounds like an interesting talk! Let me know what you think if you’re able to attend.

Friday through Sunday you can be a part of Global Game Jam. Sac IGDA is hosting the Sacramento region edition of this world-wide game developer hackathon at The Game Room Adventure Cafe in Elk Grove.

Plan Ahead

StartupSac just announced a new monthly gathering: StartupSac Happy Hour. The inaugural event is on Tuesday, January 31 at The Golden Bear in Sacramento and Sonny Mayugba, founder of Requested, will be the first AMA (ask me anything) guest. Part social, part information exchange, come check it out! It’s a free, no host event. Jeff and I will both be there.

There’s lots of great stuff going on in the tech startup community–check out this week’s Startup Digest for details. And for even more startup information, happenings and resources, visit the StartupSac Website.
