For February’s Startup Happy Hour StartupSac and the Carlsen Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Sac State welcomed another successful startup founder to the virtual Zoom stage, Matrubials co-founder and CEO Ishita Shah.
Ishita is the co-founder of Matrubials, a spin-out from the Foods For Health Institute, at UC Davis that is developing novel milk-derived antibacterial therapeutics to address infectious diseases. Ishita and her team are developing the anti-pathogenic molecules from milk into therapeutics geared towards all-age diseases. According to Crunchbase, Matrubials has raised $125,000 in Pre-Seed funding from from Silicon Valley accelerator Y Combinator. They are also a cohort member of Sacramento-based accelerators FourthWave and Sacramento Growth Factory.
In a far-ranging discussion, Carlsen Center Executive Director Cameron Law chatted with Ishita about her background, launching a biomedical startup, funding deep tech startups, her experiences in accelerators and more.

About Ishita Shah
Ishita M. Shah, PhD, is the CEO and co-founder of Matrubials, a spin-out from UC Davis, Foods for Health Institute. As the Associate Director (Microbial Programs) at FFHI, she has investigated the role of milk components in human health, specifically in terms of infectious diseases. Previously, Dr. Shah has worked at Genentech (Senior researcher, infectious diseases) and Columbia University (Postdoctoral scientist), receiving several awards (PhD thesis prize -(UMBC’05)/ key researcher/ speaker).
