Glassmaking

Lots of “making” news came my way last week, so I’m dedicating this issue to the concept of “making.”

Funded by the City of Sacramento’s Creative Economy Pilot Project grant, Sac-Made launched their website last week and is inviting makers, artists, artisans and manufacturers to apply to be included in their public-access directory. Their “coming out” will be at the December 8 Holiday Makers Mart. You can learn more about Sac-Made here.

Did you know our region has a number of makerspaces? A makerspace typically operates on a membership model and members have access to all kinds of equipment to make things. From 3D printers to laser cutters to electronics, sewing, metal, jewelry and woodworking equipment, makerspaces give you a place to pursue your hobby or even create your product-focused business. Hacker Lab has makerspaces in Rocklin, Midtown and Rancho Cordova. Non-profit MakerHQ is on 16th just off Broadway. Davis has Inventopia and there’s a new makerspace in Yuba City, Wide Awake Geek. The Sacramento Public Library even has a makerspace! Did I miss any? Let me know so we can add them to StartupSac’s directory.

Power Inn Alliance just wrapped up the 2018 Making Your Mark micromanufacturing contest which included a prize package worth more than $50,000. This year’s winner is Michael Patterson, founder of Liquid Flower. Michael manufactures a line of all natural and organic cannabis-infused health and wellness products. Honorable mention went to California Sunlight and Robotics Evolution. Learn more here.
