About Our Speaker: Matthew Perkins
Matthew is Founder and CEO of Macro Oceans, a startup transforming seaweed into low-carbon chemicals for use in materials, food, cosmetics and many other applications.
Matthew is an experienced entrepreneur, having built and sold his first company, Yield Pop, to The Climate Corporation. He has more than a decade of experience in terrestrial agriculture and was the first business hire at Inari, a gene editing technology company, where he helped raise >$100M in venture capital. When he isn’t working, he’s outside: skiing, hiking, climbing, or surfing.

Macro Oceans, a California-based seaweed biotechnology startup. The company sources seaweed from Alaska and transforms it into low-carbon chemicals for use in materials, food, cosmetics and many other applications. Its core technology is a multi-product, zero waste system that makes seaweed processing low-energy and cost effective. Macro Oceans has raised $5m to date from leading climate tech investors Refactor Capital, Lowercarbon Capital, and McKinley Capital.
About The Series: Learn From a Local
Learn from a Local is a new speaker series, hosted by AgStart, a non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurs advancing innovation in agriculture, food, and health. On the 1st Thursday evening of every month, AgStart will host a local speaker from the agriculture, food, and health world to speak on a topic relevant to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. The goal is to offer a space to learn about our region and connect with local individuals while expanding the AgStart community.
