About Our Speaker: Dr. David Block
David E. Block currently serves as the Program Director for UC Davis’ Integrative Center for Alternative Meat & Protein (iCAMP), focused on accelerating the commercialization of novel approaches to sustainably feeding the world’s growing population. Dr. Block is a faculty member at UC Davis, the former chair of the department of Viticulture and Enology, and has deep experience in fermentation and food science. Dr. Block is one of the leading voices in the country on research and commercialization of alternative meat and protein across plant-based, fungal-based, and cell-based approaches.

iCAMP is the first comprehensive Center of Excellence accelerating the commercialization of plant, fungal/fermentation, and cell-based alternative meat and proteins. Their mission is to meet the growing global demand for delicious, nutritious, and affordable protein-rich foods. iCAMP is a collaborative initiative between UC Davis, UCLA, The Culinary Institute of America, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, USDA, and Solano Community College. iCAMP is dedicated to accelerating the sustainable commercialization of alternative proteins through comprehensive research and academic partnerships.
About The Series: Learn From a Local
Learn from a Local is an on-going speaker series hosted by AgStart, a non-profit organization supporting entrepreneurs advancing innovation in agriculture, food, and health. Typically on the 1st Thursday evening of every month, AgStart hosts a local speaker from the agriculture, food, and health world to speak on a topic relevant to our entrepreneurial ecosystem. Our goal is to offer a space to connect with local individuals and learn from leaders in our local AgriFoodTech sector on topics relevant to our AgStart community.
