Code for Folsom

Local non-profit Yellow Circle is bringing its cybersecurity camp for students ages 13-18 to Folsom, in the first annual Code for Folsom. The goal of the 2 day camp is to increase interest in cybersecurity careers and increase the diversity in the cybersecurity workforce, ensuring that enough young people are inspired to direct their talents in this area that is critical to the future of our country’s national and economic security.

The program for Code for Folsom will closely resemble a previous camp, Code for Grove, which was held in at Cosumnes River College in June this year. At that event, 79 students, representing 32 schools, attended seven classes starting with an introduction to cybersecurity. Each class built on concepts from previous classes and included topics such as authentication in computers security, encryption concepts, network security, and social engineering. Classes were taught by a group of volunteers consisting of cybersecurity professionals from Intel and the State of California. By the last class of the day on the first day of the bootcamp weekend, the students were working on encryption, and even building an enigma machine using a Pringles can.
