Great food is only one ingredient in building a successful food business. Whether you have been selling at farmers markets, testing recipes from home, or dreaming about launching your own product, growing a food business takes more than passion. Understanding permits, pricing, marketing, funding, and business planning can feel overwhelming, especially when you are trying to figure everything out on your own.

The Alchemist Microenterprise Academy was created to help food entrepreneurs navigate those challenges. If you are ready to take your business seriously, this 12-week program provides the knowledge, support, and community to help you move forward with confidence.

Learn the Business Side of Food Entrepreneurship

The Alchemist Microenterprise Academy, also known as AMA, is a comprehensive business training program designed specifically for food entrepreneurs in the greater Sacramento region.

Running from September 1 through November 18, the program combines virtual learning with several in-person sessions, making it accessible while still providing opportunities to connect face-to-face.

Classes are held Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., giving participants the flexibility to continue working while building the foundation for their business.

Throughout the program, participants develop a business plan while learning the essential skills needed to launch or grow a successful food business.

Gain Practical Skills That Matter

Building a food business involves much more than creating a great product.

AMA covers real-world topics that every food entrepreneur should understand, including:

  • Accessing capital and becoming loan-ready
  • Business permits and regulations
  • Marketing your products
  • Food safety and product development
  • Hiring and managing employees
  • Business structures and legal considerations
  • Sales tax and financial planning

Rather than leaving participants with general advice, the program provides practical guidance that can immediately be applied to building a stronger business.

Connect With Experts and Fellow Entrepreneurs

One of the biggest advantages of joining AMA is becoming part of a community.

Participants learn alongside other food entrepreneurs who are facing many of the same challenges. They also receive guidance from industry professionals who understand what it takes to build and grow a food business.

In addition to classroom instruction, participants receive individualized feedback while developing their business plans. Those relationships often continue long after the program ends.

Designed for Entrepreneurs Ready to Grow

AMA is intended for entrepreneurs who are serious about building a food business.

Whether you are just getting started or already operating an early-stage business, the program can help you identify your next steps and create a roadmap for growth.

The program is designed for entrepreneurs in the greater Sacramento region who are building food businesses for human consumption and are committed to long-term success. It is not intended for hobbyists, businesses outside the region, or companies that do not produce food for human consumption.

Priority is given to entrepreneurs from low-income and under-resourced communities, although others may also be accepted into the program.

An Investment in Your Future

The cost to participate is $300 if accepted into the program, with payment plans available for those who need additional flexibility.

Participants who complete the program and submit their finished business plan during the final week receive $50 back, making the investment even more affordable.

Graduates also gain access to additional opportunities, including eligibility to apply for the Alchemist Kitchen Incubator Program, discounts at the Alchemist Kitchen commercial kitchen, priority opportunities at the Alchemist Public Market, and an expanding network of AMA alumni.
