Founder Institute, a global accelerator program, is kicking off its first Sacramento cohort this fall. Diversity Looks Good on Us

Kudos to the Sacramento Business Journal and journalist Victor Patton for highlighting our region’s accomplishments as well as potential areas for improvement in achieving diversity in our technology sector in last Friday’s edition. “Sacramento’s tech sector is still in its early stages of development, but here, startup founders, investors …and others say the city may be poised to create a technology economy where people of color and women play active leadership roles. Recent data seems to support those claims.” It was a breath of fresh air for me, given the recent sexual-harassment and gender discrimination scandals in the tech...

Investment Capital Increasing in Region

I’ve been working in Sacramento’s entrepreneurial ecosystem since 2008 and the last couple of years have been very promising! We’re finally starting to resemble a startup hub and the community has solidified a lot since 2015.  A few years ago, Up Global issued a white paper identifying five critical ingredients that support flourishing entrepreneurial ecosystems: talent, density, culture, capital, and regulatory environment. Our region has always had the talent and the advent of numerous coworking spaces as well as the development of downtown and midtown has improved our density. Back in 2014, I believed we were weakest in culture...

Discovering the Rainforest in Kansas City and This Week’s Sacramento Startup Happenings

I was invited to spend last week in Kansas City at the Kauffman Foundation’s ESHIP Summit as an ambassador for the Sacramento startup community. Over 425 people engaged in supporting entrepreneurial ecosystems from over 200 cities, 48 states and 12 countries, participated. Some of my favorite startup advocates — Brad Feld (Startup Communities author), Steve Case (founder of AOL and responsible for launching the Rise of the Rest movement) and a new favorite, Victor Hwang (VP of Entrepreneurship at Kauffman and co-author of of The Rainforest: The Secret to Building the Next Silicon Valley), spoke at the event. This...

Happy Summer–Stay Cool But Keep Grinding! This Week’s Sacramento Startup Happenings

The longest day of 2017 is officially this Wednesday, June 21 although technically it occurs in our time zone at 9:24 PM on Tuesday, June 20. The solstice marks the first day of summer but doesn’t it seem kinda wonky that the days get shorter following it? I mean, hey–if you’re the start of summer, shouldn’t things be picking up instead of tapering off? Where am I going with all of this? While summer often means taking vacations and enjoying more outdoor activities, for the entrepreneur, that likely is not the case. No matter what season of the year,...
